Friends of the Lake District

Coniston Fell Care Day

Practical Conservation Tasks:

At a glance

  • Friends of the Lake District - Dry stone walling: Come and try your hand at the traditional craft of dry stone walling in the Outgate area of Coniston (car sharing from the hub). This activity will be led by Jack Ellerby from Friends of the Lake District.
  • Fix the Fells – Old Man of Coniston footpath maintenance: Fix the Fells path maintenance, which is largely carried out by our experienced and dedicated volunteers, is essential to keeping our upland paths in good working order, and helps identify and mitigate erosion issues before they become bigger problems. This activity will involve walking from Walna Scar Car Park, maintaining footpath up to the Old Man of Coniston and walking back down via Goats Water and along Walna Scar Road. Led by Matthew Tweed from Fix the Fells, National Trust.
  • National Park – Scrub clearance & bridleway maintenance: Led by Sara Spicer from the Lake District National Park, working along the bridleway and miles without stiles route from Coniston to Yewdale/Shepherd’s Bridge.
  • National Trust – Rhododendron clearance: Cutting and stacking this invasive species to improve diversity in our woodlands for our native flora. Led by Leila Todhunter from the National Trust in Guards Wood (a short walk from the hub).
  • National Trust - Building a vegetation exclosure: Help the National Trust Ranger team to protect newly planted trees by building a vegetation exclosure in Little Langdale. This is a strenuous task involving team work to knock in wooden posts and attach stock netting. Located a short walk (15 minutes) from Fell Foot Farm working on the fell side above the Garburn Track.
