This role requires a minimum commitment of 10 duties afloat each year plus training days and update sessions. Due to the training input involved in this role, we also request volunteers anticipate committing to at least 2 years’ volunteering.

Overview

The Lake District National Park welcomes over 19 million visitors a year, with many of them attracted by the beautiful stretches of water here. The role of our Volunteer Lake Rangers is to positively engage with a wide range of lake users, from open-water swimmers to powerboat drivers. Our volunteers work with our staff Lake Ranger team to promote safe enjoyment of the lakes by providing information, support, advice and education to visitors.

At a glance

  • Provide advice and assistance to the public on and around the lake.
  • Promote understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the National Park and its lakes.
  • Assist in the care and maintenance of the Park’s lakeshore and island properties.
  • Provide reports and information relating to the activities occurring on the lakes.
  • Monitor the Authority’s moorings (Ullswater only).
  • Work with other agencies, such as the NT and EA, when necessary.
