Vista Veg are a grower’s co-operative based in Crosby Ravensworth, Cumbria. They grow high-quality, responsibly-grown vegetables for people who care about where and how their food is produced.
They sell to local families through a box scheme and supply local businesses. They also lead growing clubs in local primary schools and healthy eating courses in partnership with Barnardos.
Home Grown Here is the brainchild of the Eden-based growers’ co-operative, Vista Veg, and the Director Lynn Barnes. And over the past few years the initiative has gone from strength to strength, raising awareness of where our food comes from and how growing locally has vast environmental benefits.
The initiative also runs some entry level courses in horticulture for food production to help new entrants gain the confidence and skills to pursue a career in food production.
Home Grown Here is a veg box scheme delivering a wide variety of fruit and veg year-round to your door. Their crops are grown by a co-operative of Cumbrian farmers and growers in their fields and polytunnels across the county. Together they are building a more sustainable food system for Cumbria.
We believe that simple changes to how veg and fruit is grown, bought and consumed can transform our food system for the better and play a vital role in helping Cumbria reach and sustain carbon neutral beyond 2037.
The Land + Nature Skills Service visited Lynn Barnes (photographed), Director of Vista Veg, at their site at Crosby Ravensworth, to chat about community growing schemes and careers in food production horticulture in Cumbria.
This is the latest instalment of our Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) funded "Day with..." series, Thanks to FiPL funding from the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.
