Himalayan balsam is one of the most widespread and impactful invasive plant species across the UK and Ireland. Unfortunately, it is also a plant that is frequently mismanaged, or ignored until it creates monocultures. This new course, the first of its kind, teaches candidates how to practically manage this plant and achieve local eradication. The course covers the history, ecology, and distribution. Followed by an in depth look at hand pulling, hand tools, mowing, trimmers, brushcutters, and pesticide application as management techniques. Finally, we discuss the main causes of mismanagement, and how to avoid them.
