Overview

Honister Slate Mine is the last working slate mine in England, with a heritage of traditional stone craftsmanship that stretches back centuries. We produce slate for high-end residential and commercial projects, using traditional methods that preserve one of the UK’s most distinctive building materials. We are looking for a motivated and reliable individual to join our team as a River Stonemason and Saw operator helping produce Slate Products using traditional techniques. Riving slate is a skilled craft that requires patience, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn. You will work alongside experienced craftsmen, full training will be given to teach you the traditional skills needed to split and shape slate for roofing.

At a glance

  • Trial Shift - To help you decide if the role is right for you, we offer a half-day taster shift at the mine. This gives you the opportunity to experience the work, meet the team, and try your hand at riving slate. If you enjoy the work and we feel you’re a good fit, we will move forward with the hiring process.
  • Join Us - This is a rare opportunity to learn a traditional craft and work with natural stone at England’s last working slate mine. If you are willing to work hard, develop new skills, and become part of a unique heritage industry, we would love to hear from you.
