Tree
Surgeon

Tree Surgeons carry out a variety of tree-focused work spanning the whole lifetime of a tree, from planting to removal. This work regularly requires the climbing of trees and working at heights, sometimes for hours at a time, which can be very physically demanding. Often, Tree Surgeons use heavy equipment and machinery to carry out their work.

Tree Surgeons work outside in a range of weather conditions and use a wide range of equipment to carry out their role as well as pesticides and fertilisers, so you will be expected to uphold a high standard for health and safety as a Tree Surgeon.  You will be expected to wear a variety of PPE (Personalised Protection Equipment) such as boots, helmets, chainsaw trousers & gloves, ear protection, and eye protection.

Typical activities of a Tree Surgeon can include:

  • Planting trees and plants
  • Identifying hazards posed by trees
  • Assessing tree health and treatment
  • Climbing trees to cut back or remove branches
  • Cutting down/removing trees & stumps
  • Servicing equipment (e.g. chainsaws & chippers)
  • Conducting tree surveys and producing reports
