University of Cumbria has partnered with the World Food Prize Foundation to become the first UK university to offer the Global Challenge youth programme, including hosting the UK Youth Institute in April 2026.

The Global Challenge is an international, self-led development programme for young people focused on global food security issues. During this transformative experience, participants research a food security challenge in a country of their choice outside of the UK and write an essay proposing their innovative solutions. Participants then attend a Youth Institute conference where they present their ideas to peers and a panel of experts.

The UK Youth Institute will be held on Wednesday April 22, 2026, at University of Cumbria’s Ambleside campus, with the generous support of multiple partners and individuals.

Participation is now open to young people 15-18 years of age (at the time of the UK Youth Institute on April 22, 2026) in the UK. Participants, teachers and parents may express interest via this short form

Cumbria’s Land + Nature Skills Service (LANSS) based at University of Cumbria’s Ambleside campus are supporting the promotion of the World Food Prize Foundation Global Challenge & 2026 UK Youth Institute.
